Jazz pianist Ashley Wey performs debut CD release concert
VICTORIA – After nearly a decade of touring – including recent European dates with four time Grammy Winner Manny Kellough – electric and eclectic Victoria born jazz pianist Ashley Wey returns home to release her full-length debut, Star Seeds, at Hermann’s Jazz Club on Saturday, Nov. 26 at 8:30 pm.
Ashley will be performing with drummer extraordinaire Kelby MacNayr and esteemed bassist Sean Drabitt who – in addition to being her long-time friends and musical compatriots – also acted as her studio band while recording the CD this past spring.
Acting as producer, composer and performer on her debut recording Ashley “wanted to explore love and romance from a few different viewpoints…” adding interpretations of some old standards (Sinatra’s “Nice and Easy” and the Doris Day classic “Secret Love” among them) to four of her original jazz compositions. What results is a CD which veritably crackles with musical influences of folk, jazz, pop and soul while still being anchored by her exuberant yet heartfelt melodies. Special guests on Star Seeds include vocalist Azure McCall, violinist Taylor Rankin and Argentinian guitarist Pablo De Luca .
Ashley has worked and toured with many noteworthy artists, including 2006 Canadian Idol winner Eva Avila, Belinda Brady, Brandi Distrehaft, Mae Moore, Chris Rouse, Joni Nehrita, Pearl Kaufman, American Idol star Kimberly Locke, and the Juno Award-winning group, The Parachute Club. In between her hectic international touring schedule and the recording her cd, Ashley even found time to appear at the TD Victoria International Jazz Festival supporting Mae Moore and at Victoria’s Ska Festival with Chris Murray and the New Victorians.
Known for her energetic performances, sparkling demeanor and dazzling smile, Ashley Wey’s live performances are something to behold, and this concert will certainly not disappoint.
